The monasteries of Meteora, built on striking rock pillars above Kalambaka, are among the most remarkable landscapes of mainland Greece. A visit is usually combined with a stay in Kalambaka or Kastraki, or with a route to Delphi or Thessaloniki.
Meteora lies inland, so it is reached mainly by road, from Athens, Thessaloniki or Delphi. Kalambaka has a railway station, but to visit the monasteries and get back comfortably, a private car with a driver is the most flexible option.
